Description

St. Louis isn’t the biggest city in the country, but there’s no doubt that it’s home to some of the most dedicated hockey fans. In 1967, St. Louis was chosen to host one of the six expansion teams that would double the size of the National Hockey League (NHL). Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh also got their own franchises in that first historic expansion. Of the other two teams in the mix, the California Golden Seals disappeared within a decade and the Minnesota North Stars eventually moved to Dallas.

If there’s one thing Blues fans are known for, it’s their loyalty. The team is the oldest expansion team that has yet to win a Stanley Cup, and they haven’t played in the finals since 1970. Their die-hard fans, however, are undeterred. The Scottrade Center is always packed when the boys are at home and “St. Louis Blues” is played live before every game.

Over the years, some of the greatest players on ice have worn the blue and gold. Wayne Gretzky skated with the Blues for a season between stints in Los Angeles and New York, and Blues players have won all of the major NHL awards at least once. Brett Hull is probably the best-known member of the Blues franchise, smashing team records and earning a Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player (MVP) in the historic 1990-1991 season. Despite being unable to capture the Stanley Cup, the Blues were the only team in the NHL to make it to the playoffs in every year of the decade in the 1990s.

If you count yourself among the legion of dedicated St. Louis fans, our quiz will test how much you know about the Blues and might even give you something new to think about. One thing’s for sure—when the Blues finally do win the Cup, the Gateway Arch is going to tremble from the outcry of their jubilant fans.
