Do You Know Hockey?

How much do you know about the greats of the NHL?

Introduction

Nobody’s too sure where the game of hockey was first played, but the Canadian town of Windsor, Nova Scotia, lays claim to its invention. What is clear is that the first league was organized in Montreal, playing with wooden pucks and eight-foot wide goals. The McGill University Hockey Club was founded in 1877 and won the first official hockey tournament at the 1883 Winter Carnival. By 1893, there were hundreds of teams playing in and around Montreal and Lord Stanley, the Governor General of Canada, donated a silver bowl to use as an annual trophy. Professional hockey players existed even before the NHL was founded. The Western Pennsylvania Hockey League was paying its best players as far back as 1902. Canadian leagues then started paying their players as well, leading to the formation of the professional National Hockey League in 1917.

The NHL as we know it began with a core of six teams in 1942. They were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. In 1967, six more teams were added. The league grew to 18 teams in 1974 and currently stands at 31 with the latest addition of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. Each team is only allowed to have a maximum of 90 players on its reserve list, but that still means over 2,500 guys in any given year are attached to an NHL team.

Over the past 100 years, we’ve seen some amazing players. Men like Brett Hull who could disappear in plain sight, or craftsmen like Wayne Gretzky who proved that being smart was as important as being tough. Twenty-one different trophies and awards are handed out to the most outstanding players, coaches, and managers in the league every year. Can you name the winners? Do you remember the iconic goals that assured their shooters of a berth in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Our quiz will test your knowledge of the greats and the grinders who made it big in The Show.
